Vehicle-finance research before application or signature

Car Finance Guide for South African Buyers

A vehicle-finance decision should be based on the full agreement rather than the monthly instalment alone. Compare the deposit, interest, fees, insurance, term and any final balloon payment before you choose.

What should you compare in a car-finance quote?

Compare the cash price, deposit, amount financed, interest rate, fees, term, monthly instalment, insurance requirements and total amount repayable. Check whether a balloon payment remains at the end.

  • Cash price and every item added to the finance amount.
  • Deposit amount and when it must be paid.
  • Interest rate and whether it can change under the agreement.
  • Number of instalments and the total amount repayable.
  • Initiation, service and other disclosed fees.
  • Optional products and whether you have agreed to each one.
  • Balloon or residual amount due at the end.

What is a balloon payment on vehicle finance?

A balloon payment is an amount left for the end of the finance term. It can reduce regular instalments but it does not remove the debt. You still need a plan to pay, refinance or settle that final amount.

Ask the credit provider to show the agreement with and without a balloon payment. Compare the total repayment and think about the car's possible value at the end without assuming that a future sale will cover the balance.

How much car can you afford?

Use a monthly transport budget that includes more than the instalment. Leave room for insurance, fuel, servicing, tyres, licence costs, parking and unexpected repairs.

Which questions should you ask before signing?

Ask for the full written cost, clarify every optional product and understand what happens if your circumstances change. Take time to read the agreement before accepting it.

  • What is the total amount repayable over the full term?
  • Is there a balloon payment and how much will it be?
  • Which products are optional and which have I accepted?
  • What happens if I settle early, miss a payment or need assistance?
  • Which costs are not included in the finance agreement?

Common questions

Is the lowest monthly instalment always the cheapest car-finance option?

No. A longer term or larger balloon payment can lower the monthly figure while increasing the time you owe money or leaving a larger final amount. Compare the total agreement.

Should you include insurance in your affordability calculation?

Yes. Insurance is part of the real cost of keeping a vehicle and a finance agreement may set insurance requirements. Get a realistic quote before you commit.
